The Concept of Wellness – A Universal Cause For Better Health and Well-Being
Health, as defined by the World Health Organization, is the “state of full mental and physical health and not just the absence of sickness and infirmity.” A number of definitions have also been used over the years. Some indicate that it is a state which has been attained after long periods of struggle. Others define health as the sum total of all the healthy component of the body, and some even think that health is the sum total of the abilities and capacities for self-development of an individual.
To attain good health, we must first identify what makes us sick. Some of the major causes of sickness are deficiencies in nutrition, stress, toxins, chemicals, environmental factors, genetic makeup, and so on. These may sound like broad categories but they can be broken down into even more subcategories. For instance, environmental factors include pollutants in the environment, radiation from natural sources like sunlight and cosmic rays, and so on.
The second major area is mental health. This area includes everything from depression to bipolar disorder, anxiety, schizophrenia, personality disorders, and various mood swings. Mental health therefore covers every aspect of a person’s psychological condition, including his or her thoughts, emotions, thinking patterns, and behavior. Mental illness therefore includes all the conditions that interfere with the functioning of one’s thought and emotion systems.
The third major dimension is emotional wellness. Emotional wellness includes resilience, vitality, and positive emotions. It is the ability to manage stress, anger, depression, fear, stress, and other negative emotions and impulses in a normal way. All the three dimensions of health can be combined to form a composite dimension of general health called functional capacity. This composite dimension of general health includes all the components of the other two dimensions.
In order to improve our health, we must pay special attention to our physical and mental health. As we age, our physical health starts degrading. And because mental health is also an essential part of our physical well-being, we should also take care of it. Our only hope is to make sure that our genes are maintained and that our cells are provided with the right nourishment. As you can see, wellness means different things to different people. But there is a good reason why most people consider it to be synonymous with public health. Wellness, as a concept, has spread across the world and is now used by many different organizations for the betterment of human health. It has also been incorporated into many different fields, including education, business, and politics, just to name a few. Whether or not it’s used by governments or companies, one thing is for certain: there is no denying the fact that wellness has become a much more important issue in the world today.
